Sea Turtles in Bermuda

Sea turtles are among the most iconic wildlife encounters in Bermuda. Green turtles are the most commonly seen species, often gliding over seagrass beds, while hawksbill turtles are occasionally spotted around coral reef systems. Bermuda’s waters serve as an important habitat for juvenile turtles, making sightings possible year-round, particularly while snorkeling or swimming in calm bays. Areas with healthy reefs and seagrass offer the best chances to observe these gentle marine reptiles in their natural environment.

The Bermuda Skink

The Bermuda skink is one of the island’s most unique residents. As Bermuda’s only endemic land vertebrate, this small lizard exists nowhere else on Earth! Skinks are most often found in rocky coastal areas, where they bask in the sun or dart quickly between stones and vegetation. Because they are critically endangered, sightings are rare, but locations such as Spittal Pond Nature Reserve and some of the smaller offshore islands offer the best chance to glimpse one. Seeing a Bermuda skink is a special occasion and a reminder of how delicate the island’s ecosystem is.

The Bermuda Petrel

The Bermuda petrel, locally known as the cahow, is one of the rarest seabirds in the world and one of Bermuda’s greatest conservation triumphs. Once believed extinct for more than 300 years, the species was rediscovered in the 1950s and now breeds on islets around Castle Harbour. The breeding season runs from January through June, when these birds return to land to nest. While sightings on land are uncommon, you can join a boat tour supported by the Bermuda Zoological Society to see these incredible birds!

The Bermuda Buckeye Butterfly

On land, one of the most charming wildlife encounters comes from the Bermuda buckeye butterfly. With its warm brown wings marked by striking eye-like patterns, this endemic butterfly is commonly seen fluttering through gardens, coastal paths, and open grassy areas. The Bermuda buckeye is present year-round, and you may spot caterpillars as well. These butterflies are an easy and rewarding sight for visitors, offering a low-key but equally memorable experience of Bermuda’s natural world. Whale Watching in Bermuda

Each spring, Bermuda becomes a prime location for whale watching as humpback whales migrate through the surrounding Atlantic waters. From March through April, these massive marine mammals pass close enough to the island to be seen from shore or during boat excursions. Breaching, tail slapping, and spouting are all possible sights during this season, making whale encounters one of Bermuda’s most dramatic wildlife experiences! While whales are not present year-round, timing a visit during migration season can offer unforgettable moments at sea.

Bermuda Wildlife Viewing Tips

While encountering wildlife on the island is no doubt exciting, it’s always important to keep the following in mind:

  • Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife, both on land and in the water
  • Never touch, feed, or chase animals, including sea turtles and birds
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect coral and marine life
  • Stay on marked paths in nature reserves to avoid disturbing habitats
  • Follow local regulations and guidance
